An archive of over thirty works and commissions by Guido Morris printed at The Latin Press, St. Ives, and beyond (c.1935-1956)

30 thirty works and commissions by Guido Morris

A collection of printed ephemera produced by Douglas “Guido” Morris (1910–1980) between c.1935 and 1956, of varying sizes.

A pioneer in the art of printing, Guido Morris established the Latin Press in the mid-1930s and re-located several times. His most productive and well-regarded phase was during his time at St Ives, Cornwall – much of which is represented in this collection, which is printed on various hand-made papers. Morris’ stated aim was to raise printing to a stage “where printings can be framed as pictures, regardless of their matter; having an abstract quality of design satisfying in itself”. One highlight of this collection is a glass-framed broadside headed with ‘CATALO’ distinctly truncated, the full title being ‘Catalogue of an exhibition at St. Ives, September 1946 in The Crypt of the New Gallery’ where Morris exhibited alongside Sven Berlin, John Wells, Peter Lanyon, and Bryan Wynter. Regarding this exhibition, Morris wrote “it is perhaps the first time anywhere that printing had been exhibited side by side in an art gallery with drawings, paintings and sculpture”.
