A large oblong red cloth gilt-titled folio in slipcase and its original white box, published by the artists’ own ART for ALL imprint. This book is the most important and iconic of Gilbert & George’s publications: ‘The Red Sculpture Album’ (1975). The lavishly produced art book was limited to 100 copies (of which this signed copy is numbered 91). The artists are introduced as “the sculptors”. The project originated as an instance of street theatre in which the artists – painted red – performed robotic gestures in Tokyo, Japan, and the book was published a few years later to document a 90-minute “living sculpture” action where taped messages commanded the duo to adopt various poses which the album depicts across eleven captioned vibrant colour photographs. The rarest and most desirable of the pair’s publications. This copy includes its slipcase and original white box. Price: £25,000.
